In-Person Auditions
Undergraduate and Graduate
—Undergraduate and Graduate applicants’ audition days consist of an acting/vocal/dance audition.
—For auditions in Boston at The Boston Conservatory an accompanist will be provided.
—At regional auditions applicants must bring pre-recorded music.
—Applicants should prepare “age-appropriate” material.
—Students approved for admission will be given a musicianship placement exam at the beginning of the fall semester.
ACTING
Two short, contrasting monologues: one from modern, post-war literature; one from classical literature. Examples of post-war dramatists are Miller, Williams, Albee, Inge, and Shepard. It is suggested that the classical piece be chosen from Shakespeare’s comedies and histories or from Moliere. A 4-minute time limit for the total acting portion of the audition will be strictly enforced.
VOICE
Two brief, contrasting songs from the Broadway repertoire: one ballad and one upbeat selection. Songs should demonstrate vocal quality, phrasing, rhythmic skills, and lyric interpretation. Choose songs that express a character’s feelings rather than tell a story (avoid narrative songs like “Nothing” from A Chorus Line). Again, a 4-minute time limit for the total singing portion of the audition will be strictly enforced. An accompanist will be provided for Boston auditions only. Music must be properly marked and transposed
(if necessary). At regional sites, applicants must bring a pre-recorded accompaniment for auditions.
DANCE
Be prepared to learn a combination in various musical theater styles. Applicants should wear the following attire for their audition:
—Women: Solid colored unitard or leotard with dance pants. Bring jazz shoes. (Bring tap shoes if you already own them.)
—Men: Form fitting, solid colored tee shirt and jazz pants. Bring the same shoes listed above for women.
RECORDED AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
—Undergraduate and Graduate applicants’ recorded auditions for the Theater Division must consist of video tape or DVD and an audio cassette tape or CD.
—Applicants who send a recorded audition are required to supply a written statement along with the recording stating that the performance is their own and has been performed without editing.
—Scenes from productions are not acceptable.
—The video camera must be equidistant from the singer and the piano, and the tape/DVD should give a full-body view.
—Auditions for the Theater Division consist of an acting/vocal/dance audition.
—For the dance portion of the recorded audition, either show a short jazz (and tap if applicable) combination or if you are not a dancer, please submit a short letter explaining your dance experience to date.
—Applicants should prepare “age-appropriate” material.
—Students approved for admission will be given dance and musicianship placement exams at the beginning of the fall semester.
