Fran Charnas

Musical Theater

Fran Charnas has worked professionally as a producer, director, choreographer and writer. Her award winning musical,The All Night Strut!, has played scores of venues from Los Angeles to Monte Carlo, performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra (BPO) and the Glenn Miller Orchestra and was nationally broadcast on PBS-TV. The show is now represented by Musical Theatre International (MTI). She has completed a sequel, In the Groove, and she is co-author/director of Sheboppin', a coming of age ‘60s musical that premiered at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston. She is currently at work on a holiday version of Strut! and on a new musical, based on the life of the legendary singer and actress, Ethel Waters.

At the Conservatory, Charnas conceived and directed Too Marvelous for Words: The Magic of Johnny Mercer, and she directed productions of Cabaret, A Chorus Line, West Side Story and The Club, as well as creating 12 original musicals/revues in collaboration with her students. She also serves as the Graduate Musical Theater Thesis director and the producer of the annual New York Showcase for Conservatory seniors.

Charnas earned her B.F.A. from Ohio University and her M.A. from Emerson College, with early training at the Cleveland Playhouse.
