Larry Sousa

Larry Sousa is the choreographer of the upcoming Broadway musical, Merry Go Round, featuring Florence Henderson in her long-awaited return to Broadway.

A nationally recognized director/choreographer, Sousa’s work has appeared on the stages of Pasadena Playhouse, Garry Marshall’s Falcon Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Utah Musical Theatre, Hangar Theatre and many more.

Sousa is the recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Ovation Award, the Backstage-Garland Award and numerous TAMY Awards. He is an NAACP Theatre Award and L.A. Weekly Theatre Award nominee and a two-time winner of the American Dance Awards “Choreographer of the Year” prize.

This past summer, Sousa directed The Sound of Music, starring Patrick Cassidy for Reagle Music Theatre, and he co-conceived, directed and designed Accept Me, a new Dance/Theatre work about bullying at the prestigious Joyce Theatre in New York City, featuring Project Moves/The Gold School. 

Sousa also directed the North American regional theater premiere of Swing for Musical Theatre West in greater Los Angeles, along with the world premiere of You Mutha: A One Mom Musical at the New York International Fringe Festival. He choreographed the world premiere of The Tin Pan Alley Rag, starring Andre DeShields, and he also choreographed a featured number for Donna McKecknie in S.T.A.G.E, the world’s longest-running HIV/AIDS benefit. Additionally, Sousa choreographed the film The Rising Place, staring Billy Campbell and Tess Harper, Yes Yes Nanette (A Star-Studded tribute to Hollywood legend Nanette Fabray) and the workshop production of Happy Days: The Musical, written and directed by Garry Marshall. 

Sousa appeared in the Broadway companies of She Loves Me, The Goodbye Girl, Busker Alley, Wonderful Town (NYC Opera) and My Favorite Year (Lincoln Center Theatre workshop). On the small screen, Sousa was featured in 3rd Rock from the Sun, Grace Under Fire, Tracey Takes On and Mrs. Santa Claus.  

Also an accomplished theatrical designer, Sousa has designed scenery, lighting and projections for more than 50 productions. This spring, Sousa will design and co-choreograph a Bollywood-inspired production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Boston College.

Before coming to The Boston Conservatory, Sousa was a visiting guest professor, director and choreographer at the University of Southern California where he staged Drood and Is There Life After High School.

A sought-after guest teacher, Sousa has taught at Ithaca College, University of Missouri/Kansas City, University of California at Irvine, Walnut Hill and at numerous dance studios and conventions across the US and Canada. He is a senior lecturer at Bridgewater State University and a longtime faculty member of the prestigious Gold School for Dance Art in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts. He is also a frequent contributor to Dance Studio Life magazine.

Sousa holds a B.F.A. in theater from Ithaca College and pursued a unique interdisciplinary M.F.A. combining musical theater and theatrical design at the University of California at Irvine.
