Susan Hagen

Double Bass Faculty

A Boston native, Susan Hagen received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Double Bass Performance from Boston University, graduating with honors as a student of Edwin Barker, principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

An active freelancer, for the past seven seasons Hagen has spent most of her time performing as an extra player with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Hagen has been a frequent performer with Emmanuel Music of Boston, New England String Orchestra, Boston Classical Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Chamber Orchestra of Boston, Opera Boston, the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra and the Utah Symphony, among others. She was a fellowship student at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1998 and again by invitation in 1999.

Hagen is a frequent guest lecturer at Berklee College of Music, is currently on faculty at the Gordon College Music Department and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, and is also the bass coordinator for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. She performs chamber as a founding member of Trio Nordica as well as with Winsor Music and the Radius Ensemble. She has recorded for Arsis and BMOP Sound among many other labels.
