Music Director

Name:
Ben Davenny
Company (If Applicable):
First Congregational Church of Somerville
Description:
First Congregational Church of Somerville, UCC, is a thriving community in the heart of Davis Square, Somerville, MA. We are seeking a dynamic and creative music leader who will work with our Minister, Associate Pastor, Organist and Choir to create inspiring and beautiful music for worship every Sunday and on special occasions. This is a part time (8-10 hours/week) position, with pay commensurate to experience. As the Congregation is growing, so are our opportunities to make music. In addition to our Adult Choir, we have a Children’s Chorus, a Bell Choir, a Jazz Band, a Folk Band and a Marching Band, and these are all amateur ensembles. You need not lead all of these ensembles, but you should plan to cultivate volunteer leadership for those groups you don’t feel called to lead. We love a wide variety of music in our services, and we welcome experiments, surprises and challenges. You will meet regularly with our Ministers to plan worship services, and you will have responsibility (and a great deal of freedom!) to select hymns, anthems, offertories, and service music. You will rehearse the musical ensemble(s) and conduct them at our worship services. You will discover new music for us to sing and play; if you compose music, we would love to bring it to life! You will lead the Congregation in song (with the help of the Adult Choir) for our hymns and service music. You will organize our music library (or find a volunteer librarian!) and use it as a resource. You will bring us to tears, and to our feet. The successful candidate will have experience leading musical ensembles, a spiritual calling to make music for worship, and mad music skills as either a singer or an instrumentalist. A calm disposition and cheerful personality will help a lot. A degree in music performance would be great; dual degrees in music performance and ministry might be better. We are an anti-racist, Open & Affirming community. People of color, women and LGBTQ people are particularly encouraged to apply. If you can also bake cookies or fix bicycles, that would be great, too. To be considered for the position, please email your résumé to: fcs-music-director-2013@googlegroups.com
