Artist Diploma Program (ADP)

Acceptance to the Artist Diploma Program (ADP) may be offered to an exceptional young musician who has already begun a promising career. Audition is by invitation only, and both the audition and documentation requirements are rigorous.  For more details, please see specific application requirements and audition information.  The number of Artist Diploma candidates in residence at any given time is limited to a maximum of two or three individuals.

The goal of an Artist Diploma residency is to construct a mutually edifying, symbiotic relationship between the candidate and the Conservatory during a two-year residency period.  The ADP is best viewed as a form of artistic partnership rather than a typical degree program. We provide faculty mentorship, performance opportunities, virtually unlimited access to courses, a supportive, diverse and challenging artistic community in which the artist can practice and develop, and a full scholarship.  In exchange, the candidate makes significant contributions to the quality of our community. As an artist, the ADP candidate contributes performances of the highest possible caliber. As a colleague and citizen, the ADP candidate shows unusual ability to engage and challenge others, is articulate and effective in personal expression and has a positive impact on the communities which s/he engages.  The successful ADP candidate often spends a significant amount of time outside the Conservatory traveling to competitions and performances, while having ongoing commitments to the Conservatory community which s/he honors with integrity and consistency.

Each residency is specifically and uniquely constructed to encompass the particular strengths and goals of the candidate.  Specific goals and requirements for the residency are determined during meeting with the candidate; his/her designated faculty mentor and the division director.  These will in almost all cases include applied lessons, appropriate performance activity, (including ensemble or chamber activity when appropriate) formal solo recitals during the course of the residency.  In addition, goals regarding the candidate's contribution as a citizen, mentor and teacher will be discussed and agreed upon.

Completion of an Artist Diploma requires two years of study. Requirements for the diploma are:

  1. An applied lesson each semester
  2. Appropriate ensemble activity as assigned. It is expected that an Artist Diploma candidate will make exceptional contributions to the musical life of the community.
  3. One formal recital per year
  4. Concert and recital attendance each semester

Beyond these core requirements, Artist Diploma students may enroll in an unlimited number of courses each semester. At the beginning of the first semester of study, the ADP student, Music Division Director, and applied teacher meet and establish the structure of the 4-semester program.
