The Boston Conservatory offers several music education degree options:

Prospective Music Education Students:

Your Training

The Master of Music in Music Education Program (MMED) comprises two summers of intensive study, part-time study during the intervening academic year and a semester-long teaching practicum.

The Graduate Diploma in Music Education (GDME) includes all coursework required for the Initial license without specific academic courses that are integral to a master’s level program. The GDME will be of interest to students who already hold a Master’s degree in music or another field and now wish to earn a teaching license.

Five Year Bachelor of Music/Master of Music Education Opportunity

Undergraduate music students may apply in their junior year for admission into the Master of Music in Music Education program. Accepted students can earn the B.M. and the M.M. in Music Education in five years. Admission to this Music Education Master’s degree program requires a 3.0 GPA, completion of a third year sequence in music core courses, and demonstrated commitment to music teaching. The MMED degree, which leads to music teacher licensure, requires 40 credits, including 24 in two summers of intensive work. Boston Conservatory undergraduates are able to complete this program and begin teaching careers with only five years of residency at the Conservatory. 

The Institute for Music Education

All summer course work is offered through the Institute for Music Education, which brings together a faculty of scholars and practitioners. Formal course work is supplemented by guest lectures and workshops. The Institute requires intensive study: seven weeks of more than 40 hours of class weekly; extensive readings are assigned before the first day of class; and research and writing assignments extend as late as six weeks following the end of classes.

MENC: The National Association for Music Education 

Through The Boston Conservatory chapter of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, students receive opportunities to be involved with this professional organization for music educators and receive benefits such as the monthly national journal and the quarterly Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) state journal. All students interested in music education and the teaching of music are encouraged to join and contribute to the chapter. Semester activities include creating projects, presenting guest speakers and workshops, attending the MMEA All-State conference, participating in outreach activities, and learning to use various online music education resources.

Your Teachers

You will study the art of teaching with a team of dedicated musicians, educators and practitioners. Many of our Music Education faculty members currently work in public school and other educational settings. A number of them are leaders in the field and hold prominent positions in state and national Music Education organizations. All of our faculty members will help you to become the best musician and music educator that you can be. As Music Education alumna Kelly Graeber says, “The instructors are more than teachers; they’re mentors who support you and help you figure out who you are as a person and how you want to be as a teacher.”

Your Teaching Opportunities

The Student Teaching Practicum is a full-time commitment in two classrooms (elementary and secondary). Students are matched with appropriate practitioners in carefully chosen school settings.

Your Future

In recent years, job placement for music education graduates of The Boston Conservatory has been 100%. The initial music education license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is accepted in almost all states through specific reciprocal agreements. Alumni of the program are currently working as band directors, church choir directors, choral directors and music teachers all over the US. Recent postings have included positions with The Maret School (DC) and Tobin School (MA), as well as a post as the high school band director at Lexington High School (MA).
