Music Theory

The undergraduate Core Course provides students with the tools to apply an understanding of music theory to their own repertoire and performance. This is achieved through three interrelated course sequences: Ear Training: sightsinging and dictation, Time & Rhythm: performance-based group work on pulse, subdivision, and polyrhythm, and Harmony & Counterpoint along with Theory & Musicology Electives: analysis: identification and understanding of short-range and long-range harmonic, structural, and formal procedures.

The Masters Degrees in Composition, Choral Conducting, and Orchestral Conducting each have theory requirements. For all other MM students graduate theory courses are available as electives.
