Song Project

Jump to...

The Song Project is a component of the Composition Seminar, in conjunction with the Junior Vocal Performance Seminar; instructor, Kathryn Wright; pianist, Yukiko Oba.

Early in the fall semester Composition majors are paired with Voice majors of the Junior Vocal Performance Seminar. Each composer will write a song for voice and piano for this singer. This project aims to give participants some experience of the commissioning process, a process that generally comes with restrictions and requirements for both the composer and the performer to work within.

Singers and composers are expected to pool their ideas about possible texts and become familiar with each other's work. The finished work should be a set of two songs, not two unrelated songs. In other words, the set should be something more than the sum of its parts.

For this year's Song Project composers should choose a poem of 20 lines or under. The setting should be in English
