Music History

The five-semester undergraduate music history sequence comprises a detailed study of Western music in an historical context from antiquity to the present day, using specific works as examples.

Students attend two hours of lectures each week and a one-hour Lab led by a Music History Department Teaching Assistant.

Music History 1: Ancient to Mid-Renaissance 

MU 251 
Spring Semester
Credits: 2 
Prerequisites: none
Meetings: two 50 minute lectures weekly and one 50 minute lab weekly

Course Objectives

Knowledge of the music of Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, and the early to mid-Renaissance (antiquity to 1520) is acquired through lectures, listening assignments, research, essays, and an ensuing familiarity with and understanding of the following areas:
 • Ancient Music, Greek Music
 • Early Middle Ages: Liturgy, Chant, Modes, Mass, Office
 • The Vernacular Tradition
 • Early Polyphony: School of Notre Dame, Motets, English Polyphony
 • French and Italian Music in the 14th century, Machaut
 • Beginning of the Renaissance: Dunstable, Du Fay
 • Franco Flemish Composers 1450–1520: Ockeghem, Busnoys
 • Josquin des Prez

An understanding of the music of the late Renaissance to the Baroque (1520 to 1720) is provided through listening assignments, research, and familiarity with the following areas of study:
• Reformation, Counter-Reformation, Palestrina
• Madrigals and Popular Songs in 16th century Italy
• English and French Madrigals and Popular Song of the 16th century
• Instrumental Music of the 16th century
• The "Second Practice", Late Madrigals, Monody, Early Opera
• Chamber and Church Music of the Early 17th century
• Italian and German Music of the 17th century
• Concerto, Suite, Vivaldi, Corelli, Couperin
• Handel; High Baroque Opera, Oratorio
• Bach; Cantata, Fugue, Organ Works
