The Boston Conservatory to Host Cultural Exchange with Beijing Dance Company on Friday, November 11, 2011

The Boston Conservatory will host an international, cultural exchange with Beijing Dance Company, China’s world-renowned, premier professional dance company ( on Friday, November 11, 2011.  The event begins with a breakfast reception at 9:30am, followed by a 10am contemporary ballet master class in which Beijing Dance Company dancers will “team teach” Boston Conservatory dance students the fundamental techniques of traditional Chinese dance training.  The Beijing Dance Company will also demonstrate the classical elements that form the basis of Chinese dance. All events take place in Studio 003 in The Boston Conservatory Theater building at 31 Hemenway Street, Boston.

According to Boston Conservatory Dance Division Director Cathy Young, “Our goal is to use the universal language of dance to foster community and cross-cultural learning, while also laying the groundwork for future collaboration between these two prestigious dance organizations.”

In attendance will be Mr. Wang Chuanliang, President and Party Secretary of the Beijing Dance Academy, the People’s Republic of China’s premier center for dance training and education.   

The event marks Beijing Dance Company’s inaugural visit to Boston and the beginning of its four-city American tour, with performances in Boston’s John Hancock Hall on November 12 (7:30 pm) and 13 (1:30 pm).   The tour is presented by Chinus Cultural Productions with support from China Arts and Entertainment Group under the direction of the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China.

According to Boston Conservatory President Richard Ortner, “It is our great honor to host Beijing Dance Company in an event that brings two cultures together and gives our students an important opportunity to connect with professionals in the international arena.  This is a rare and exciting learning experience for all involved.”

About Beijing Dance Company

Beijing Dance Company was founded in 1987 and has quickly emerged as a powerhouse in the Chinese dance scene.  The company is in residence at the historic Beijing Dance Academy.  Established in 1954 under the express direction of Chairman Mao Zedong, Beijing Dance Academy has trained China’s top dancers in three specific areas: dance performance, choreography and dance history.  Through Chairman Mao’s vision, the Academy became the country’s only accredited institution for dance training and higher education, an honor that remains to this day, and has come to be known as “the cradle of dancers in China.”
