Launch of New Extension Program Series

Boston, MA—Following the grand opening of its new theater complex in October 2010, The Boston Conservatory—the oldest performing arts conservatory in the nation—announces a new series of extension programs offering high school and collegiate intensives, professional development workshops and enrichment courses for both children and adults.  Created and directed by The Boston Conservatory’s faculty, the new extension program series is designed to bring the Conservatory’s expertise in music, dance and musical theater to a larger audience.  The series kicks off in February 2011 with the majority of programs beginning in summer 2011.

“We believe the performing arts are for everyone,” says Pat Hoy, Dean and Chief Academic Officer of The Boston Conservatory.  “Whether you are a high school or college student on the performing arts degree track, a performing arts professional looking to brush up on skills and earn professional development points, a parent wishing to expose your children to music and art or a performing arts lover seeking to learn more about the process, our new programs offer learning and development opportunities at every level.”

The new suite of extension program offerings fall into four categories:

High School and Collegiate Intensives

Building on the success of The Boston Conservatory’s Summer Dance, June 26-July16, 2011, and Vocal Choral Intensive, July 10-23, 2011, the Conservatory introduces three new programs:

Musical Theater Dance Intensive: Running July 17-August 6, 2011, this new program offers promising dance students the opportunity to work with Broadway veterans and acclaimed faculty to build “triple threat” skills and proficiency in musical theater dance styles.

High School Composition Intensive: Running July 17-30, 2011, this new program offers serious composition students the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty to compose a short piece that will be performed by a string quartet in residence.

The Experimental Musical Theater Intensive: Launching in January 2012, this new program offers performing arts students and professionals the chance to learn, apply and perform experimental methodologies in voice, movement and acting.

Professional Development Workshops

The Boston Conservatory’s new professional development workshops offer teachers and directors the chance to brush up on skills and earn professional development points (PDPs).

Musical Theater Professional Workshop: Running June 26-July 2, 2011, this new program offers 48 professional development points (PDPs) and the chance to brush up on directing skills and work hands-on with Boston Conservatory student actors in rehearsal and performance.

Vocal Pedagogy Professional Workshop: Running July 8-10, 2011, this new program offers 18 professional development points (PDPs) and the opportunity to work with Massachusetts General Hospital voice center doctors and learn about musical theater and classical voice pedagogy, developmental repertoire, comparative pedagogy and vocal health.

Youth Enrichment Programs

Youth Enrichment Programs: Running July 18-August 12, 2011, this new program is a series of one-week music and dance programs for students in grades 5-12.  Specific course offerings include African Drumming, Dance and Song, Recorder and Folk Dance, World Music Beats and Junk Jam, a class in which students make music using household “junk.”

Boston Arts Academy Summer Music Program: Running July 11-July 22, 2011, this program offers workshops, sight-singing and ear-training sectionals, as well as chorus and wind ensemble rehearsals and a final performance to music students from the Boston Arts Academy.

Adult Enrichment Programs

Performance Series:  The Boston Conservatory’s new performance series offers patrons enriching one-day programs that include lecture, lunch and ticket to a matinee performance at the Conservatory.  Spring 2011 offerings include “A Day at the Opera” (February 6, 2011) and “Tommy: The Other Side of the Love and Peace Generation” (April 10, 2011).

Zumba Express: Running concurrently with the Youth Enrichment series, The Boston Conservatory now offers a summer series of day-time exercise and fitness courses for caregivers, students and professionals looking for a fun work-out.
