Financial Support Documents

International students requiring a visa to study in the U.S. must supply proof of financial support for the first year of their program. A letter of support from the account holder should be provided if the funds are not in the student’s name. Documents must be less than six months old. The amounts listed below were the estimated cost of tuition, fees, room, board, and miscellaneous expenses for the 2007-2008 academic year. The official 2008-2009 tuition and fee schedule will be published in the spring of 2008, so please note that the required funds for that year may be higher than those listed below. International Student Visa Information
Most international students study at The Boston Conservatory on an F-1 student visa. Students may obtain an F-1 visa by visiting a U.S. embassy or consulate and presenting the Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) issued to them by The Boston Conservatory. The Boston Conservatory can issue a Form I-20 after receiving an admitted student’s tuition deposit, information form, and financial documentation.

For more information about the visa application process, click here for the U.S. Department of State’s website on student visas. Students should apply for the F-1 visa in their country of citizenship or permanent residence. To confirm what your local U.S. embassy or consulate requires for F-1 visa applications, also visit its website. For links to U.S. embassy and consulate websites, click here. On the website, learn how to schedule an appointment, how many times you can apply for a visa, what specific documents are required, and what procedures you must follow.

F-1 students are expected to attend the educational institution that issued the Form I-20. Any students currently attending another school in the U.S. must consult with the international student advisor at their current school for a transfer release before a Form I-20 can be issued by The Boston Conservatory.

Students who wish to bring a spouse and/or children (under age 21) with them to the U.S. will need to submit documents of additional funds for each dependent to The Boston Conservatory. The Conservatory can then issue Form I-20s for each dependent. To obtain their F-2 (dependent) visas, dependents must present at the U.S. consulate the Form I-20 issued them by The Boston Conservatory and evidence of financial support. Proof of marriage for spouses and birth certificates for children are also required. Note that no paid employment is permitted for F-2 visa holders under any circumstances.

Arrival
Students may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the start date printed on their I-20. Students who are not required to participate in the Intensive English Program in August should plan to arrive in Boston in time to attend International Student Orientation, as appropriate. (See dates below.)

New Student Orientations
All international students new to The Boston Conservatory must attend International Student Orientation on August 31, 2006 to learn about visa and immigration regulations, employment, cultural issues, and other important information for F-1 students. Non-native speakers of English must also sit for a language placement test later this same day.

Attendance at the general New Student Orientation (comprehensive orientation for both U.S. and international students) is also required. Following is the complete orientation schedule.

Undergraduate students attend:
International Student Orientation on Thursday, August 30, 2007, and New Student Orientation from August 31–September 9, 2007.

Graduate students attend:
International Student Orientation on Thursday, August 30, 2007, and New Student Orientation from September 1–9, 2007.
