Advanced History and Analysis of U.S. Contemporary, Non-Classical Music

As part of a well-rounded K-12 music education, it is essential for students to experience the music of yesterday—and today. This course is designed for students to explore the teaching of U.S. contemporary music (the music of today) through two lenses: history and theoretical analysis. Through assignments, discussions, and class activities, students will examine the origins and influences of selected musical examples and design contemporary music-based pedagogical tools for use in both performance and non-performance K-12 music settings. By effectively incorporating U.S. contemporary  music into their teaching, students will increase the relevance of K-12 music education for all learners.
